What in incredible day and night ! ( last night ! ) Yesterday was my first day at my internship, it was soooooooooooo tiring. I worked from 9-6, I got to go up to Capitol Hill ( the Hill ) for a hearing on a legislation for banning a procedure known as "partial abortion." It was very interesting, and a lil dry at times. After that I went on a tour of the Library of Congress since I didn't feel like going back to work just yet. Heehee. Overall, the day was exhausting, just trying to read and retain so much information and then physically tiring myself out by running around the Hill.
After work I headed out with some people in the program to hit Happy Hour in Dupont Circle. It's just about a ten min. walk from us, a cute little area with coffee shops, stores, restaurants, and bars. We started at about 6:30ish, and ended around 12:30 ! I love this town ! It was really fun, just being out with people, talking about work and life in DC. Everyone here just goes out in their work clothes - there's no wasting time in this town ! The vibe is def different thatn the LA scene and I love it !
We ended up hitting about four bars, just sitting, chatting - shooting the east coast shiet = ) We even got to do some dancing at this cute little restaurant that changed into a bar. I got home and was able to get a decent night's sleep for work early this morning ! It's great working in the building I live in, I work four floors down which is just soooooooooo perfect. But it's also great cause I get to leave the building practically everyday to go up to the Hill for hearings.
Like this morning for example ! I got to go up to the Hill, which is actually really fun in and of itself, I just jump on their convenient mass transit - The Metro and 15 mins. later I'm up at Capitol Hill ! So yeah, I went to a hearing about Government reform called : Use of Management Tools in Formulating the Budget. I think one of the best things about this stuff is the feeling you get when you walk into this HUGE room with big fancy curtains, everyone's in a suit and today there were reporters and cameras there ! It's my job to take notes on any comments that the UC might be interested in. After that I enjoyed my nice walk past the Capitol building and the Supreme Court ( which is absolutely incredible to stand in front of ! ) to Union Station - an amazing huge old train station that is now converted into a shopping area with tons of restaurants and a HUGE food court.
Today was just a great day for me and I really realized how much I love it out here. It is just so different from California, and esp. LA. The people here are just so power driven, but not in that overly pompous way. They are smart, assertive, and really down to earth and I can really appreciate that. The city just breathes life, it's just amazing that you can walk past someone at a coffee shop and he's drafting a new bill for Congress ! And my internship is just wonderful, they give me enough leeway to pursue topics I like, and they are so welcoming and helpful. There's just something about the east coast that just sits really well with me and despite the fact that I am like 2,400 miles from home, I feel so happy and comfortable here.
So sorry that these emails are getting so long. I am just so intrigued and continously amazed by this place. Hope Cali is treating you all equally as well !
Always,
Kristine
PS- my mailbox was a lil' on the empty side today . . . so the cards and stuff are on their way right ? heehee
