Our intern is almost home!
Tue, 20 May 2003

Whew ! What a past few weeks ! Why is time flying by like nothing here . . . ? I guess I'm just having too much fun, heehee.

The past few weeks everyone has been buckling down on their papers, after all, we are here for some sort of academia. Mine is coming along pretty well, I definitely need to log in some hours at the coffeeshop though since the TV in my apt. is too distracting at times !

This weekend I was in dire need of a getaway. My roomie, Ahee and her friend Chris were going to Boston and asked me if I wanted to come too. ( Thank god they did, I would have shot myself if I had to stay the weekend with my two other roomies - more later ) But by Monday, tickets for Thurs. - Sun to Boston were soooo expensive, about $200 ! So, I opted for the cheap way and took the "chinamen bus" ( in Brent lingo ) to Boston. It's a bus that runs from DC->NY and then another one from NY->Bos, for a grand total of $55 ! Iz so vewy cheap ! So, I did that and it was actually a wonderful experience. I woke up early Thurs. and took the 8:30am bus, but it was late leaving DC so I missed my connecting bus in NY. Luckily, they leave on the hour so I took the 3pm NY and got to Boston around 7:30pm. It was really cool, I got to explore a lil' of the NY Chinatown while I was there, and of course I took some dorky tourist pics. The weekend was really refreshing and relaxing. We didn't party that much, I think cause we're all pretty broke but we went and saw the sights and just chilled. We stayed with Ahee's cousin and Chris' cousins who were soooo nice, they fed us and paid for our drinks when we went out ! Sunday was Chris' cousin's graduation and since I don't really know him I opted to spend the day by myself. Good choice too since the weather was gorgeous. ( after being about 40 degrees the past few days ) I hung out at Harvard Square and pretended to feel smart and then went down by the Charles River and lounged in the sun, reading and writing. It was the perfect day. Monday I left Boston and barely made my 11am bus to NY, by about 2 mins ! When I got to NY I had to hail a cab, and I left an hour time slot to hail a cab and go to the pick up location for the DC bus but remember back when Danny Glover couldn't get a cab in NY ? Well, I know I ain't black and half a hour later, damn near ready to cry I was still trying to hail a cab ! They're ridiculous ! They just drive right past like they don't see you. I have to say, I haven't felt that hopeless, frustrated, and angry all at once in a long time. Finally, some old Chinese guy in an old Cadillac pulled up ( make shift taxi ?? ) and took me there for a little bit more than usual, but at that point I didn't care cause if I missed this bus ( they leave on the dot ) I woulda had to get a hotel ! So, in a nutshell - NY left a bad taste in my mouth and I am not eager to go back again.

It's soooooooo good to be home in DC now, there's something very comforting about this place. I realized that Boston isn't quite how I imagined it in my head, the streets are old and bumpy, everything is generally a lot dirtier there and there is just a bit more distinct atomsphere of hardness. The people are a little bit rougher on the edges than here in DC. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to go back though since this whole time I was set on applying for grad school there and I realize now that it is not a place I want to live again. It's not that it's bad, it's just not as good as I remember.

So, work is hectic as I try and complete projects, handle all my Spain paperwork, and work on my two papers for school. Plus, Momz is coming out this Thursday so I am clearing out the schedule for nights on the town !

Everything is going extremely well. I get really sad when I think about how I will be leaving here soon since I think I have really found my niche here. There are parts of LA I miss but I know that I will have DC on my mind for a while too. If anything at all, these past few months have helped me grow tremendously - professionally, emotionally, intellectually, leisurely, ( haha ! ) and untuitively. Although I don't see DC as a place I would live for good, I would love to come back here for a few years to work, so I better start kissing some "networking butt." The more I travel, the more I realize how the Bay Area is truly the best place on earth to live and I remember that fond ol' saying : Home is where the heart is.

Briefly, some pointless gossip about the roomies. While there is Nina, one that I have never really taken a liking too since she is just so damn stuck up, there is Elham who seemed all wonderful but it turns out she is a S-N-E-A-K-Y girl. She's the type of girl that will eat your food and think you're too stupid to notice, or too shy to say anything. I found her going through my desk a couple of times but I can't really accuse her of anything. It just sucks always having to watch out for your stuff.

Well, my busy but quick day at work is coming to an end. Time to eat some dinner upstairs and watch my AMERICAN IDOL !
Bye for now !
See most of you soon = )
Always,
Kristine
